Glad Tidings To The Believers

The side walls of the Sulaymaniya Mosque in Istanbul are decorated with a very lovely ayat, which stays there in four pieces for 450 years. An eternal revelation for careful eyes, thoughtful minds.

The 112. ayat of the Surat at-Tawbah:

at-taaibuunal-'abiduunal-haamiduun
Those who repent to Allah, who worship Him, who praise Him,
as-saaihuunar-raaki'uunas-saajiduun
who go out (in Allah's cause), who bow down, who prostrate themselves,
al-aamiruuna bil-ma'ruufi wan-naahuuna 'anil-munkari
who enjoin good and forbid evil,
wal-haafizuuna lihuduudillaahi
and who observe the limits set by Allah;
wabashshiril-mu-mineen
so give glad tidings to the believers.

This ayat is read with one breath, connecting all the words with each other. If you read it slowly, you'll see how influential it is.

Repentance, worship, praise, bowing down, prostration.
One can understand all of these, but what is meant by "going out (in Allah's cause)"? Perhaps an internal travel deep inside, perhaps just a travel outside. There are different explanations about it:

* "Travel of my ummah is fasting." (Hadith)
* "Jihad in the way of Allah."
* "Hijra from Makka to Madina"
* "Travel for education"
* "Travel to look at the signs of Allah to take a lesson from them"

The words which are derived from the root of "twb" are mentioned 87 times in our Book. A significant portion of these are in Surat at-Tawbah. Especially the following ayat after which the name of the surat is given:

9:118. He turned in mercy also to the three who were left behind; (they felt guilty) to such a degree that the earth seemed constrained to them, for all its spaciousness, and their souls seemed straitened to them, and they perceived that there is no fleeing from Allah, and no refuge but with Him. Then, He accepted their repentance, that they might repent (unto Him). Verily, Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful.

First, man regrets and repents unto Him,
then the Lord accepts his repentance;
He is The One Who accepts repentance.

By the way, do you know how many days had past between the repentance of those three men and the acceptance of their repentance? And what did they do in those days?
